“Among people so alien” brings together works by artists Marleen Rothaus, Laure Marville and Virginia Lupu, whose practice explores the flourishing of the figure of the witch as a feminist and emancipatory symbol. The appropriation of modern witchcraft is experiencing a political, (pop) cultural and occult renaissance–not least because of its subversive potential to empower the female body itself. “Among people so alien“ is a critical examination of this and is based on both historical narratives of witch hunts and contemporary literary foundations by Silvia Federici and Octavia E. Butler.

Marleen Rothaus (Cologne, DE) is an artist as well as an activist and social worker. In 2020, she graduated as a master student at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Her oil paintings have already been shown internationally and also function as banners at protest actions that Marleen Rothaus organises as part of her artistic practice.

Laure Marville (Geneva, CH) always works site-specifically in her artistic practice, creating wall-sized, collaged paper or textile works to which she adds embroidery, linocuts and other printing techniques. In 2022 she won the Swiss Art Award. Virginia Lupu (Timis, oara, RO) is a photographer and artist. In her photographic series, she depicts her subjects as they (co-)exist in society, without adapting their appearance to social norms, expectations and stereotypes.

Louisa Behr (Frankfurt am Main, DE) is a curator and author. She is currently completing her Master‘s degree in Curatorial Studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule and Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Her curatorial practice moves at the intersection of performative and visual art.

Mouches Volantes is an interdisciplinary Art Space Project in Cologne, presenting visual and performing arts.
